Salt Cell Cleaning and Replacement

Scale buildup inside a salt cell is normal wear, not a defect, and most of it is manageable with regular cleaning rather than an early replacement. This site is built around the high end of what gunite construction allows: negative/infinity edges, swim-up bars, sun shelves, fire-and-water features, and full outdoor-living integration with decking, kitchens, and shade structures designed alongside the pool, not as an afterthought.

A salt cell generates chlorine via electrolysis, and the plates inside it accumulate calcium scale over time, especially in areas with harder water. Cleaning that scale off restores output; ignoring it shortens the cell's life.

  1. Watch for the warning signs

A "low salt" error with correct salt levels, reduced chlorine output, or visible white/gray buildup on the cell plates when inspected are the typical signs scale has built up.

  2. Turn off power before removing the cell

Always de-power the system at the control panel (and ideally the breaker) before disconnecting the cell for inspection or cleaning.

  3. Inspect the plates

Light, even buildup across the plates is normal scale; heavy buildup concentrated at one end, or visible plate damage/flaking, points toward a cell nearing end of life rather than one that just needs cleaning.

  4. Clean with a manufacturer-approved acid solution

A diluted acid wash (per the manufacturer's specific ratio, not a guess) dissolves scale without damaging the plates; soak, rinse thoroughly, and reinstall.

  5. Know when to replace instead of clean

Most residential salt cells last roughly 3-7 years; a cell that needs cleaning every few weeks despite correct water balance, or one with visible plate wear, is more cost-effective to replace than to keep servicing.
