Basic Pool Water Testing at Home

Part 7 of 10: Pool Ownership 101

A testing method is only as useful as its consistency; switching between test strips and a liquid kit week to week, without understanding why the numbers differ, is a common source of confusing readings. This site is built around the high end of what gunite construction allows: negative/infinity edges, swim-up bars, sun shelves, fire-and-water features, and full outdoor-living integration with decking, kitchens, and shade structures designed alongside the pool, not as an afterthought.

Home pool testing generally comes in three tiers of accuracy and cost: test strips, liquid reagent kits, and digital photometers, each with a real tradeoff.

  1. Choose one method and stick with it

Test strips are fastest and cheapest but least precise; liquid reagent kits (like a standard FAS-DPD or OTO kit) are more accurate and still affordable; digital photometers are the most precise but cost more upfront. Mixing methods week to week makes trends harder to read than using one consistently.

  2. Draw the sample correctly

Pull water from elbow-depth, away from return jets and skimmers, which give a more representative reading than water scooped right at the surface or right next to a jet.

  3. Test in the right order

Check alkalinity and pH before chlorine; if alkalinity is off, correct it first since it affects how reliable the pH reading will be after a chemical addition settles.

  4. Record results, not just react to them

Logging readings over a few weeks shows trends, consistently low alkalinity, chlorine that always drops fast on sunny days, that a single reading cannot, and those trends are what actually guide a maintenance adjustment.

  5. Know when to get a professional water test

If results stay inconsistent or a problem will not resolve with correct dosing, a professional water test (often using more precise lab-grade equipment) can rule out home-kit measurement error as the actual issue.
